INTRODUCTION: Christopher Columbus

There were three profound things about Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America:

First, when he left Spain he did not know where he was going.

Second, when he arrived in the New World he did not know where he was.

Third, when he returned to Ferdinand in his court he didn’t know where he had been.

In addition, he did it all on borrowed money!

Columbus did not know much but he did a great thing simply because He believed that He could.

He had a level of confidence in tomorrow or he would have never jumped on that boat. Columbus was able to do a great thing simply because He believed that He could.  But believing he could was only one factor to this success story.

o   Understand that Columbus did not pilot that ship by himself.

o   He had help – there were other people on that ship!

That’s what this series is about; THE OTHER PEOPLE on your ship! Those people that God has put in your life in order to help you navigate and fulfill your destiny.

Before we start this five-week journey together, there are some things I want to make sure you have established as a foundation in your thinking.

Foundational Stuff 101

o   God is a good God.

o   A good God has a good plan for your life.

o   God thinks you are a good man!

o   This last point is the one people have trouble with.

o   They can believe that God is good

o   They can believe that Gods plan is good

o   But they sure have trouble believing that it takes a good man to do a good plan.

IT TAKES A GOOD MAN TO DO A GOOD PLAN

o   God does not design good plans for bad people.

·        God is the ultimate, manager.

·        He does not waste time.

·        God is the ultimate corporate executive.

·        Ask yourself this question, if you were a business executive would you plan a job description for a no good for nothing low-life person who you know had no chance at getting the job done?

o   The very fact that there is a plan for your life means that God has confidence in you to carry it out.

·        He thinks you are the right man for the job. (despite all your insecurities and your hang ups) (Who else does God have to work with? – He is stuck with us J)

·        Mark this down and do not ever forget it.

§  God has already factored in all of the mistakes that you have ever made and the ones you may be unknowingly getting ready to make in the future.

§  He was already accounted for all of that and yet He still is talking to you about His plan!

·        If God has confidence in you, you can have confidence in tomorrow.

·        You can have confidence in yourself!

o   If you do not believe that God likes you and has confidence in you just look in the Bible at some of the words that he uses to describe you.

·        God is not a double tongued person – saying one thing but meaning something else.

·        This is what God says you are:

·        Romans 8:37 – your more than a conqueror

§  God thinks you are a great warrior

·        Revelation 1:6 – you are kings and priests

§  God thinks you are royalty

·        1 Peter 2:9– you are a chosen one

§  God thinks your hot stuff

·        Romans 8:17 – you are a joint heir

§  God thinks that you are rich.

§  So God thinks, you are a rich, royal, hot-stuff, warrior!

·        But God never designed for a rich, royal, hot-stuff warrior to pilot the ship all by himself!

·        God puts people in your life to help you get where you are going.

Mark 3:14 (ESV)

14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach

o   It is all about your train!

o   It’s all about the people that you have in your life

o   Life is not ME it’s WE

o   It’s not ONE of us, it’s ALL of us

o   You cannot get to where you are going alone

§  Alone is not what the Body of Christ is.

§  Monkishness is not high-powered Christianity

§  The church is not composed of a bunch of Lone Rangers that ride in at the last minute to save the day.

o   Christianity instead, is a group sport (can I say it that way since we just came out of the Olympics?)

Hebrews 12:1 (ESV)

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

o   ILLUSTRATION: the relays, like the 100m were fun to watch in the Olympics. (those guys were booking!) Now, they typically put the fastest athlete as the anchor in the medal race. When that anchor crosses the line, and gets the win, he does not just get the medal, all four runners get the medal. But not only that, all those that ran the preliminaries also get a medal. The entire relay entourage is decorated because that team needed every single person to get that gold medal.

o   It is always about the other people that are in your life, and it does not even stop when people in your life are removed and go home to be with Jesus.

o   Those people, are still part of your entourage, according to Hebrews 12:1. Those who have gone ahead are in the grandstands of heaven cheering you on.

o   Understand something else though about this entourage business.

The People Business Generally is A Messy Business

Someone penned these words

o   The more people I meet, the more I love my dog.

Here are four relationship truths to think about[i] to help you with this messy people business

o   Some relationships will be blessings, others will serve as lessons.Either way, never regret knowing someone. Everyone you encounter teaches you something important. Some people will test you, some will use you, and some will teach you; but most importantly, some will bring out the best in you.

o   Understand what a true friend is – a friend loves at all times and those people are rare and hard to find. The fake ones are easy to find.

o   The less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve. – Don’t settle to just be someone’s downtime, spare time, part time, or sometime. If they can’t be there for you all of the time, especially when you need them most, then they’re not worth your time.

o   Even the best relationships do not last forever. – God sometimes brings people into your life for a season. Nobody gets through life without losing someone they love, someone they need, or something they thought was meant to be. People do not live forever. Appreciate what you have. Appreciate those who love you and care for you. You will never know how much they mean to you until the day they are no longer beside you. And remember, just because something does not last forever, does not mean it was not worth your while.

So let us talk about some Indispensable People that God will put in your ship.

Indispensable Person Number One: Nathan

2 Samuel 12:1–7 (ESV)

1 And the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him. 4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” 5 Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, 6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” 7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man! …

o   DEFINITION: the name Nathan in Hebrew means ‘gift’

o   These people are special ‘gifts’ from God in your life

o   The Nathan’s in your life are the truth tellers

o   They are the ones that love you enough and care about you enough to tell you the truth about YOU.

o   The Nathan’s in your life are the ones that put their bony finger in your face and tell you that you are wrong!

o   Now, they do not just aim and fire and blow the side of your face off

o   You only have so much ‘face’ to go around

o   The Nathan’s in your life have been around you long enough and know you well enough to be able phrase things in such a way that they are able to get truth over to where no one else can.

o   The Nathan’s in your life have learned HOW to minster truth

o   ILLUSTRATION: Good food is as much about presentation as it is about cooking something well.

o   You can cook a steak, present it on a nice plate with garnish, and make someone an enjoyable meal or you can take that same finely seasoned steak and slap someone across the head with it. It’s the same steak served two different ways. Which way would you prefer?

o   First, notice that Nathan was David’s friend

o   The Nathans in your life are not just busy bodies. They are not know it all’s

§  They pray the age-old prayer,

·        ‘Lord help me keep my ears open, my big mouth shut and my nose out of others business Amen!’

o   Understand that being friends for a long time and coming through stuff together, is a value not to be under estimated.

o   Nathan had earned the right to speak into David’s life

o   Always remember the importance of speaking from an established place.

§  Just because you have the truth,

§  Just because you know the truth

§  Does not mean you have the right to blatantly speak the truth anytime you feel like it.

§  You need to earn the right to speak into someone’s life.

§  No one likes a person with a “know it all” degree!

§  If you have not earned the right to speak, you will not come across to someone effectively and the truth you are trying to share will largely be ignored.

§  If you ever have the attitude, ‘Well I guess I told them about their ugly self’, you have failed as a communicator.

How Do Nathan Types Communicate?

o   First He heard from God

§  Nathan was a spirit led man

2 Samuel 12:1 (ESV)

1 And the LORD sent Nathan to David…

o   How valuable these people are.

§  If you do not have people in your life that can hear from God, you are at a severe disadvantage because apart from God and His Word all you have left to make it in life is your own self, your own wits.

§  And brother, the real truth of the matter is you are not really that good by yourself.

§  People that can hear God and speak truth to you are worth their weight in gold because if you can hear God and know its God, you have got it made!

o   Second, Nathan took the time to phrase his words correctly to David.

§  Nathan took the time to meditate and come up with a way of getting David’s attention. He told this story about the man and his little lamb.

§  The Nathan’s in your life think you are valuable enough and they love you enough to take the time to say something to you the right way

Ephesians 4:15 (ESV)

15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

o   In a world full of people, who sometimes do not even make eye contact with you, The Nathans in your life see right through you.[ii]

o   Valuing the Nathan’s in your life correctly comes from having a good understanding of yourself and the effects of the sin nature.

o   There are times when we are all ‘less than excellent’

o   There are times when we all ‘lose our way’

o   There are times when we allow pride to reign in our life and affect our ability to see things as we should

o   Thank God for the Nathan’s that God puts in our life to help us in those moments.

o   You simply cannot pilot the ship alone.

Romans 14:7–8 (ESV)

7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.
