Part 2 – Right Associations

Choose to not Live a Life of Regret!

·        You will never come to the end of your life regretting that you prayed too much!

·        You will never come to the end of your life regretting that you studied the Bible or that you spent too much time seeking God.

·        I guarantee you one thing though – you will regret it if you don’t!!!

The Anointing Comes Into Your Life By Association

·        God’s anointing comes into your life by the relationships and the associations that you have with other men and women of God who are anointed.

·        The anointing comes by association

·        It comes by proximity, by being near it.

·        Stay close to anointed people

·        Understand this about the anointing, it is timeless.

·        An anointed word from God spoken 100 years ago to a man and recorded in a book, you will find, is just as anointed today as the first day that word was spoken.

o   This is the reason why books are the perfect medium for the transfer of anointing.

o   Eight track tapes came into being and went by the wayside

o   Cassette tapes came and went

o   DVDs are here and they are on their way out and being replaced by streaming video

o   But books, have transcended all of that. From Guttenberg on down and they are still being written.

·        QUESTION: “What if you do not know someone like a Smith Wigglesworth?  I am just an ordinary Joe, an ordinary house wife, you mean I can have anointings?”

·        ANSWER: Yes, 100x yes!

o   You do not have to know the person physically for the principle of association to work.

o   There is nothing special per se about the human vessel that God uses.

o   There is nothing special about great men of God

§  Bro. Hagin

§  Smith Wigglesworth

§  John G. Lake

§  John Nelson Hyde

§  Andrew Murray etc.

o   What special about them is the anointing’s that God deposited in their lives.

o   And those anointing’s transcends generations of men.

o   Here is what I am telling you.

§  If you soak in that anointing.

§  If you apply the principle of saturation, and you

·        soak in anointed thoughts

·        you immerse and read anointed words

·        and you pursue the anointing’s of God with intensity

·        that anointing will get off on you and become part of the fabric of your life.

o   The anointing is contagious!

§  It is a highly contagious phenomenon.

§  Here is the principle in a New Testament nutshell!

Acts 4:13 (KJV 1900)

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

§  The similarities that the religious leadership saw in the disciples were not physical or personality (soul) areas.

§  They were spiritual.

§  These men saw Jesus and heard Jesus speak and now these disciples look and sound just like Him.

§  Where did they get that from?

§  They got that from 3 ½ years of walking with Him. They got that through the principle of association.

The Example of Moses and Joshua

·        Look at the similarities between Joshua and Moses and tell me what you think?

o   Joshua was a mouthpiece for God just like Moses

o   Joshua interceded for Israel just Moses

Exodus 32:11–14 (ESV)

11 But Moses implored the LORD his God and said, “O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?

12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people.

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ”

14 And the LORD relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people.

Joshua 7:6–9 (ESV)

6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads.

7 And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord GOD, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan!

8 O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies!

9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will you do for your great name?”

o   Moses and Joshua split a body of water

Exodus 14:21–22 (ESV)

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

22 And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

Joshua 3:10–13 (ESV)

10 And Joshua said, “Here is how you shall know that the living God is among you and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is passing over before you into the Jordan.

12 Now therefore take twelve men from the tribes of Israel, from each tribe a man.

13 And when the soles of the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off from flowing, and the waters coming down from above shall stand in one heap.”

o   Moses and Joshua both had manifestations of discerning of spirits – they both saw the form of God

Exodus 33:18–19 (ESV)

18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”

19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

Joshua 5:13–15 (ESV)

13 When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?”

14 And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the LORD. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?”

15 And the commander of the LORD’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

·        So, we look at the moving’s of God in the life of Moses and similar moving’s in life of Joshua; now, notice the ‘association’ piece.

Exodus 33:8–11 (ESV)

8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent.

9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses.

10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door.

11 Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

·        That same anointing, that same presence, that Moses experienced when he went into the tent, Joshua experienced when he did the same – he refused to leave the tent.

o   That is the saturation principle.

o   Joshua was around Moses and Moses was around that anointing and it transferred to him.

The Example of Elijah and Elisha

·        Look at the similarities between Elijah and Elisha and tell me what you think?

o   Both men split the Jordan

§  Elijah –

2 Kings 2:8–10 (ESV)

8 Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground.

9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.”

10 And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.”

§  Elisha –

 2 Kings 2:11–14 (ESV)

11 And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

12 And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

13 And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.

14 Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, “Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.

o   Both men had unusual activity surrounding their deaths

§  Elijah was taken into heaven alive via a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:1)

§  Elisha’s dead decaying bones brought a man back to life (2 Kings 13:20-21).

o   Both men multiplied a widow women’s oil

§  Elijah – 1Kings 17:9-14

§  Elisha – 2Kings 4:1-7

o   Both men raised a child from the dead

§  Elijah – 1Kings 17:17-23

§  Elisha – 2Kings 4:17-36

·        The anointing came upon Elisha because of his association with Elijah

o   How did Elisha pick-up the anointing from Elijah?

o   Notice how the relationship started

1 Kings 19:19–21 (ESV)

19 So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him.

20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?”

21 And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.

o   The association began with a complete abandonment of Elisha’s life, his own plans in order to follow and serve the man of God

o   This service of Elisha’s to Elijah lasted a period of ten years.

o   Notice the association/relationship at the end of this 10 year period.

o   What does 10 years mean?

§  It means the things of God are not cheap!!!

§  Salvation is free – discipleship costs you everything

§  ‘Ordinary’ – anybody can have

§  Highly effective is a whole another ball of wax.

§  I do not care what kind of microwave computerized mentality the world has – you cannot microwave His anointing’s.

§  God’s power – effectiveness for service – comes the same way as it has always come.

§  To be highly effective cannot be gotten at a spiritual thrift store. No discounts here!

2 Kings 2:2–6 (ESV)

2 And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.

3 And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”

4 Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho.

5 The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”

6 Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on.

o   This phrase ‘I will not leave you’ is restated 3 times – repetition means importance so there is a definite clue here for us to take note of.

o   Elisha refused to leave him even at the end.

§  Ask yourself this question, “What if Elijah had served 9 ½ years”?

§  What if he had bailed out right at the end?

§  What if had tried to go out and get his own ministry, after all it was 10 years!!!

2 Kings 2:9 (KJV 1900)

9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

§  Elisha would have had an anointing no doubt, but he would have missed the double anointing!

o   Here is another tidbit of info we can glean from this passage.

§  Look at the importance of being in the right place and ‘not leaving’ prematurely.

§  How do you make sure?

·        Do not let things come between you and the anointing when He is in manifestation.

·        What if on the day of Elijah’s departure, ON VERY THE LAST DAY, if Elisha stayed behind because something else came up.

o   You mean to tell me that if I served 9 years and 364 days – I could still miss something in God because I was not faithful the last day!

§  Wives do you want your husband to be faithful 99% of the time or 100%.

§  Husbands do you want your wives to love you 99% or do you want the whole thing – the whole 100%?

§  Case closed – God wants all of you to the last day!

·        Elijah even urged him to but Elisha pushed over all the obstacles to not leave the anointed man of God.

o   Even legitimate situations should be put aside if your heart is really hungry for His anointing’s and His presence.

·        Time would fail us to tell all of the transfers of anointing’s between godly men associated with one another.

o   DYK that David Brainerd died in Jonathan Edwards house

§  Johnathan Edwards preached on of the most well known sermons in the history. The sermon shook the New England region. It was called ‘Sinners In The Hands of An Angry God”

o   F.F. Bosworth passed the healing baton to T.L. Osborn

o   John Alexander Dowie influenced the healing ministry of John G. Lake

o   William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army influenced both Smith Wigglesworth and his wife

o   And William Seymour and Azusa influenced everybody.

o   The anointing comes by association.

o   And that is a holy habit that makes highly effective Christians.
